16-Year-Old Gives Birth to Second Child: North West Premier Demands Answers

A 16-year-old teenager has given birth to her second child at a health facility in the Kagisano Molopo Local Municipality, raising serious concerns about teenage pregnancy and child protection in the North West Province.

Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi has called for an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s pregnancies, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice. Speaking during his visit to Joe Morolong Regional Hospital in Vryburg to welcome New Year babies, Premier Mokgosi expressed his alarm over the rising prevalence of teenage pregnancy.

“It is unacceptable that children are forced to carry such heavy burdens. We must address this issue comprehensively, but action must also be taken against individuals who violate the rights of minors,” said Mokgosi.

Initial investigations revealed that the teenager was only 15 years old when she conceived her second child. Even more troubling is that this is her second pregnancy, with her first child born when she was just 14 years old.

Premier Mokgosi urged law enforcement agencies to prioritize the case and investigate the possibility of statutory rape. “We need a concerted effort to not only protect children but to ensure that those responsible for such acts face the full might of the law,” he stated.

The Premier also called for a multifaceted approach to tackle teenage pregnancy, involving parents, educators, community leaders, and government stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of education on sexual and reproductive health and the provision of support systems to prevent similar incidents.

The North West Province has seen a steady rise in teenage pregnancy cases, a trend Mokgosi describes as “deeply concerning and reflective of broader societal challenges.”

The case has sparked outrage among community members and activists, who are demanding justice for the teenager and calling for stricter measures to prevent the exploitation of minors.

As investigations unfold, the provincial government is expected to outline strategies to combat teenage pregnancy and strengthen child protection measures across the North West Province.
