No bail for the nurse killer – SANCO

The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in the North West on Wednesday, 19 October 2022, called for no bail for the suspect arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of Nursing Sister Iris Mamotlakana Mohorake who was recently found with a slit throat in Ipelegeng location near Schweizer Reneke.

The civic organisation has ahead of the bail hearing scheduled for Tuesday 25 October 2022 said that there is no place in society for heartless perpetrators of violent crimes.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible the ghastly as well as horrendous act which has sent shockwave across all of our communities and call on police investigations not to leave any stone unturned until the real motive for the atrocious murder has been established,” highlighted SANCO Provincial Chairperson, Paul Sebegoe conveying condolences to the Mohorake family and her colleagues.

Mohorake who was killed two days after assuming duty as Facility Manager of Ipelegeng Clinic was reportedly killed at her rented room.

Sebegoe commended community members for providing police with information which led to the swift arrest of 24-year-old Bongane Gregory Shebi who was allegedly seen around the vicinity of the murder scene with bloodied clothes.

He emphasised that united action against the scourge of gender-based violence and protection of women who are the most vulnerable in society is essential to establish safer neighbourhoods as well as peaceful communities.

“Shebi’s alleged confession to the murder should not dissuade police from pursing investigation into the possible involvement of other third parties,” he added.

According to police reports, the accused had upon arrest pointed out where he had thrown the bloodied clothes he was wearing during commission of the crime.

Sebegoe maintained that confidence in the criminal justice system will only be restored if harsher sentences are meted against perpetrators of gender-based crime and other violent crimes that are terrorizing communities.
