A raging storm has left a trail of destruction across the Moretele Local Municipality, claiming the life of an elderly man in Lebalangwa village. The pensioner, who was with his wife when their house was flooded, succumbed to the disaster, while emergency teams managed to rescue his wife.
The heavy downpours have caused widespread flooding, with damages estimated in the millions of rands. Emergency and fire department personnel have been working tirelessly to assist affected residents.
In Bollantlokwe village, a dramatic rescue unfolded as learners trapped in a school bus had to be evacuated. However, their rescue was complicated by the collapse of a bridge, making it difficult for emergency teams to access the stranded children.
The situation remains dire across the sprawling municipality, which consists of 76 villages. Some residents remain trapped in their homes, with the worst-affected areas including Kromkuil, Mmotla, Maubane, Bosplaas, Moeka, Mathibestad RDP, Carousel View, Lebotlwane, Lebalangwa, Makapanstad, Ngobi, Mmakaunyana, and Sediane View.
Moretele Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr. Masango George Manyike, confirmed that mass houses have been activated in Mmotla, Kromkuil, Carousel View, and Moeka to accommodate displaced families, with more to be set up in the coming days.
“All emergency services, including fire, disaster response, SAPS, social development, public works, municipal health, and Eskom, have been mobilized to assist in what could be the worst floods the municipality has ever experienced,” said Manyike.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and to seek shelter in safe areas as emergency teams continue relief efforts.
