North West Kicks Off Tourism Month with SMME Development in Moruleng

The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) has officially launched Tourism Month with a strong focus on SMME development and local empowerment. The launch event was held in Moruleng, where exhibitors showcased their products and services to highlight the contribution of small businesses to the tourism value chain.

MEC Bitsa Lenkopane led the initiative by personally supporting the exhibitors, purchasing from their stalls and encouraging communities to buy local. Speaking to the media, Lenkopane emphasized that the department is committed to developing the Bakgatla Ba Kgafela Heritage Sites as part of efforts to boost cultural tourism and preserve local heritage.

Looking ahead, the MEC revealed several key activities planned for Tourism Month. These include hosting an Investment Summit to unlock opportunities linked to 34 dams across the province, an Indaba with captains of industry to drive collaboration, and a programme to empower school learners about the importance of tourism.

“Tourism is one of the biggest drivers of economic growth, and by supporting our SMMEs and developing our heritage sites, we are creating opportunities for both investment and community upliftment,” said Lenkopane.

The department’s Tourism Month programme is expected to draw tourists, investors, and stakeholders to explore the North West’s diverse offerings while ensuring that local communities benefit directly from the growth of the sector.
