SunriseView Teacher Makes History at National Teaching Awards

Itumeleng Komane has made history by becoming the first teacher from the North West Province to win Position 1 in the prestigious Excellence in Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning category at the national level. Komane’s exceptional contribution to modernizing education has earned him a brand-new car, among other incredible prizes.

The North West Department of Education has made the province proud by securing an impressive nine awards at the 24th National Teaching Awards, held at Birchwood Hotel on Saturday, 05 October 2024. This marks a significant milestone, with the North West crowned the overall winner, scoring an impressive 56.2%.

The province claimed three first-place awards, four second-place awards, and two third-place awards, cementing its status as the leading region at this national event. The two first-place winners, including Komane, walked away with brand-new cars alongside other exciting prizes. This reinforces the Department’s commitment to rewarding and empowering teachers who dedicate themselves to uplifting learners and communities.

Coinciding with the global celebration of World Teachers’ Day on 05 October, this year’s theme, “Empowering Teachers: Strengthening Resilience, Building Sustainability,” reflects the North West’s remarkable achievements. The province continues to lead in empowering educators and fostering innovation in teaching.

The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, Minister of Education Siviwe Gwarube, Deputy Minister Dr. Reginah Mhaule, and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, among others. Their presence highlighted the national significance of celebrating and honoring educators’ dedication across South Africa.

The MEC for Education in the North West Province, Viola Motsumi, extended her heartfelt congratulations to the award-winning educators. She praised their resilience and dedication, stating:

“Our educators have shown exceptional resilience and dedication in shaping the future of our learners. These awards are a testament to their hard work and commitment to improving the quality of education in our province. I also take this time to wish our teachers a happy World Teachers’ Day. The true revolutionary begins with you, and against all odds, you continue to shape young minds into outstanding members of society. Thank you for giving us the most precious commodity that is hard to reward, and that is your time.”
