Motorists traveling along the N4 this morning were met with an unexpected surprise as a large contingent of law enforcement officers and officials from various sectors, including SANRAL, the National, Provincial, and Rustenburg Local Municipality, gathered for a unique engagement — not to enforce, but to educate and uplift.

In a refreshing twist to traditional law enforcement roadblocks, road users were welcomed with smiles, cold soft drinks from Coca-Cola, bottled water, neck massages, video games, vouchers, and a wealth of road safety information. The event formed part of the Easter Safely Joint Law Enforcement Operation, spearheaded by SANRAL, the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management (DCSTM), the Department of Public Works and Roads, Rustenburg Local Municipality, and Coca-Cola.

Dr Hans Kekana, Head of Department at DCSTM, said the initiative aimed to show motorists the department’s positive and caring side while encouraging safe travel ahead of the busy Easter holidays.

“We are reminding all road users, especially truck drivers, to take regular breaks during long trips and avoid traveling at night,” said Dr Kekana.

Rustenburg Executive Mayor, Cllr Shiela Mabale-Huma, also joined the operation and echoed the safety message, urging motorists to refrain from drinking and driving and to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.

“Our municipal officials will be visible and active across Rustenburg to ensure strict law enforcement throughout the Easter weekend,” Mabale-Huma said.

Ayanda Zwane from Coca-Cola expressed the company’s excitement in being part of the initiative. “We are proud to support such campaigns. Road safety affects us all, and we urge drivers to remain vigilant and alert at all times,” she said.

The campaign was well received by motorists who appreciated the positive engagement, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting road safety during one of the busiest travel periods in the country.

Thabo Masilo, a motorist traveling from Johannesburg to Botswana, was among the surprised road users. “Honestly, I thought I was about to get a ticket or worse,” he said with a laugh. “But this time, the experience was so social and welcoming. It’s not every day law enforcement treats you like this. I really appreciate the effort.”
