Another Chieftaincy Headache for North West Premier

North West Premier – Bushy Maape

The North West Provincial Government is heading to courts once again over the battle of royal houses. This time the affected parties are Barolong boo-Ratlou boo Mokalaka. In recent years, the Provincial Government has been in and out of courts trying to resolve the battle of chieftaincy in several communities including Bataung Ba Hlalele, Bakgatla and Baphalane among others. Now the Office of the Premier is trying to intervene on the matter between Barolong boo-Ratlou boo Mokalaka.

The North West Office of the Premier together with the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs have filed and served the notice of intention to rescind the court order which declared Kgalalelo Cawe as senior traditional leader of the Barolong boo-Ratlou boo-Mokalaka and their recognition as an independent traditional community.

The order was handed down on 11 August 2022. The rescission application effectively suspends the above judgement until the North West High Court determines otherwise. Furthermore, the suspension renders anything or act done or performed in terms of the aforementioned order unlawful.

In a statement, Office of the Premier said Premier Bushy Maape has undertaken to cooperate with all stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the above matter. This emanates from the meeting that Premier Maape held with Kgosi Thato Kegakilwe Letlhogile and his delegation which included Baga Maiketso and Baga Letlhogile Royal Councils.
