Another Suspected Ben Gumbi Killer in Court

The Rustenburg Magistrates Court witnessed a significant police presence today- Monday – 20 November 2023 as the second suspect in the murder of prominent businessman Ben Gumbi made his appearance. Thabani Gwala, aged 29, was apprehended in Johannesburg last Thursday in connection with the case.
Gwala, alleged to have been released on parole in 2020 after serving time for possession of a stolen vehicle, now remains in custody until December 4. On this date, Gwala is expected to appear before a new magistrate, further adding to the unfolding legal saga.


Magistrate Tshenolo Mekgwe recused herself from Gwala’s case, citing its prior handling in the trial of the first suspect, Sibongiseni Ngubane. Ngubane, who has been remanded in custody until January 9, awaits the resumption of the trial.
Gumbi (49) was fatally shot by two assailants outside a restaurant in the Rustenburg Central Business District (CBD) on 23 August 2023 Following the attack, the perpetrators quickly fled the scene in a blue Volkswagen Polo, which was later found abandoned at the intersection of Helen Joseph and Lourie Streets.


The Rustenburg community remains on edge as they eagerly await justice for the tragic loss of Ben Gumbi. Local authorities have assured the public that every effort is being made to ensure a fair and thorough investigation, leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.
