The Association of Independent Publishers (AIP) is mourning the passing of Aaron Simon “Blesser” Maleke, a trailblazer in the North West media landscape and the founding publisher of Mmegadikgang newspaper. Maleke, a respected board member of AIP, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024, after a brief illness.

Aaron Maleke was more than a publisher; he was a visionary. He began his career producing office materials like calendars and desk pads, but his natural business acumen and passion for media led him into publishing. Known for his exceptional ability to secure advertising and develop effective distribution strategies, Mmegadikgang thrived under his guidance, becoming a financial success and a model for other publishers. At the time of his passing, Maleke was actively working on plans to expand his distribution footprint and further increase his circulation.

Thabo Mooke, a fellow veteran publisher who was collaborating with Maleke on these expansion plans, expressed his deep sorrow: “Now all his dreams are like a mirage… Death creeps into our lives at the least expected moments and robs us of friends and colleagues.”

Johannes Makgate, AIP Chair for North West and Northern Cape, described Maleke as “a true trailblazer and pioneer in the North West.” Makgate stated, “AIP is deeply saddened to hear about his passing. He was a true pioneer and leader in the media industry, and his contributions helped shape the landscape of media in this province.”

Ofentse Letlape, founder of North West Insider and Kgwele newspapers, also shared his shock at the news, saying, “Aaron Maleke’s untimely passing has left me and the local media industry in mourning. He was a unique and brave news editor who could tell and uncover stories where it did not sit well with many. This was evident in his work with Mmegadikgang. Aaron was a hard worker who understood his craft and never allowed distractions. This is a profound loss not only to his family but to our entire industry.”

Mmatshepo Dikgole of Bua Mogaetsho Newspaper spoke to Maleke’s dedication to community media, stating, “He was a true community media advocate. As a publisher, he believed in hard work and real journalism, not entitlement, and would distance himself from anyone who didn’t share that ethic. He was a mentor to many and inspired me to start my media project when he was an AIP board member.”

The AIP extends its heartfelt condolences to Maleke’s family, friends, and colleagues. His passing leaves a void in the North West media community that will be deeply felt.
