ATM BOMBING SYNDICATES DEALT A BLOW IN Rustenburg RAID

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Phokeng has struck a significant blow against criminal syndicates behind a spate of ATM bombings in the Rustenburg area.

Acting on precise intelligence, police raided two houses in Freedom Park Phase 1 on Thursday night, 18 September 2025. The joint operation, involving Rustenburg Public Order Policing (POP), Crime Intelligence, the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), and the Explosives Unit, led to the recovery of firearms, explosives, ammunition, and stained banknotes suspected to be from ATM blasts.

In a second house, officers found chemicals and gloves allegedly used to attempt cleaning the stained cash. All items were secured for forensic testing.

Two suspects, Itu Monjane (33) and Nelson Huehwa (34), were arrested and later appeared before the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court, where they were remanded in custody.

District Commissioner Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae applauded the swift action, noting that the arrests marked progress in dismantling dangerous networks threatening the safety of communities.

Police say investigations are ongoing and have warned that further arrests are imminent.
