Christmas Joy as 79 Babies Are Born So Far Across North West Province

The North West Province welcomed a festive gift this Christmas Day as 79 healthy babies were delivered in public health facilities between midnight and 6 PM. Of these, 44 are boys, while 35 are girls, and all mothers are reported to be in good health with no complications during delivery.

MEC for Health, Sello Lehari, along with Acting Superintendent General Zenzo Ndabula, Acting District Director for Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District, and senior departmental managers, visited the Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex to celebrate the arrival of the Christmas babies. During the visit, the MEC handed out gifts to new mothers and their newborns while applauding the dedication of healthcare workers.

“We are here to support our nurses, doctors, and staff who sacrificed their Christmas with family to ensure lives are saved and babies are delivered safely. I commend their patriotic spirit and dedication to public service,” said MEC Lehari.

By midday, 50 babies had already been delivered in various public healthcare facilities across the province, with more births recorded as the day progressed.

MEC Lehari congratulated the proud mothers, noting the quality of care provided by healthcare workers. “This moment shows that we have the expertise and capacity to handle these special occasions. I am thrilled to see mothers and babies in excellent health. We will continue educating these mothers to ensure their babies thrive. Merry Christmas to all the families!”

Among the new mothers was a 16-year-old who gave birth to a baby boy at Klerksdorp/Tshepong Tertiary Hospital. Another young mother, aged 18, delivered her baby at Boitekong Community Healthcare Centre in the Bojanala District.

As deliveries continue throughout the day, final statistics will be released after full collation.

The MEC and his team will extend this initiative to New Year’s Day, visiting healthcare facilities to acknowledge medical staff and welcome the first babies of 2025.

The Department of Health wishes all residents a joyful and peaceful Christmas Day, celebrating the season’s blessings with their loved ones.
