The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in the North West on Tuesday, 23 Augus, called for a ward-based policing approach to tackle rising levels of crime in communities. The civic organisation appealed for adequate resources to be allocated to support visible crime prevention.
SANCO Provincial Chairperson Paul Sebegoe emphasised that effective crime prevention structures can only be established if the trust deficit between police and communities is speedily addressed.
“Community Policing Forums (CPF’s) will only be effective if they are supported by street communities and patrollers in every ward to combat crime. Dysfunctional CPF’s that exist only in name must be urgently relaunched as they are compromising the objective of the community policing concept, “remarked Sebegoe.
He indicated that SANCO is more than ready to mobilise volunteers, the business sector, churches, faith-based organisations, non-government organisations including traditional leaders for active citizenry and united action against crime through its Khuluma Mhlali campaign.
Sebegoe said that anti-corruption measures should be intensified to assure communities that corrupt elements within the South African Police Service (SAPS) are being uprooted and that there is no place in the police service for those who run with the hares and hunt with the hounds.
He stressed that violent crime that is threatening communities that is also keeping the most vulnerable hostage to fear in their own homes can only be dealt with when there is a stronger partnership between our people and police.
“The Minister of Finance’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement must be responsive to the current crime trends by prioritizing the employment of more police to combat crime and create safer communities, if the war against violent crime, gender-based violence, gangsterism and drug syndicates is to be won” he added
