The Rustenburg Local Municipality has begun demolishing multiple illegal structures built on a 300mm bulk water pipeline servitude in Ikemeleng, which supplies the elevated steel tank serving the entire settlement.

The encroachments have compromised the pipeline’s integrity, leading to severe leaks, low water pressure, and reduced inflow into the tank.
The operation, led by Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC), Karabo Phutu, was carried out in collaboration with the municipality’s Planning Unit, the Public Safety Department, and the Public Order Policing Unit (POP).

According to MMC Phutu, removing these structures is a critical step towards enabling urgent pipe repairs, which are necessary to restore normal water flow to the community. The initiative forms part of the municipality’s City at Work programme, which focuses on service delivery and infrastructure protection.
“This is about safeguarding our water infrastructure and ensuring residents receive the supply they deserve,” MMC Phutu said during the operation.
