Desbo Mohono Elected New Speaker of North West Provincial Legislature

Desbo Mohono has been elected as the new Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature. The first Legislature House Sitting, presided over by Judge President Ronald Deon Hendricks of the Mahikeng High Court, saw the swearing-in of Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) and the election of key leadership positions.

Kagiso Lazarus Mokgosi was elected as the new Premier of the North West Province, while Tshepo George Khoza was elected as the new Deputy Speaker. Additionally, Motlalepula Rosho was appointed as the Chief Whip of the House, and Tebogo Modise was named Chairperson of Chairpersons of Committees. All presiding officers were nominated and elected unopposed.

The nomination and election processes for these key positions were conducted in accordance with Section 107 read with Section 111(1), Section 128(2), and Section 129 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. During the House Sitting, Permanent Delegates to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) were also nominated, and the new Chairperson of the NCOP was elected.

The North West Provincial Legislature comprises representatives from multiple political parties, including:

  • African National Congress (ANC) with 23 MPLs
  • Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with 7 MPLs
  • Democratic Alliance (DA) with 5 MPLs
  • Umkhonto weSizwe Party (1 MPL)
  • Action SA (1 MPL)
  • Freedom Front Plus (1 MPL)

This election marks a new chapter in the leadership of the North West Province, with the newly elected officials set to steer the legislative agenda and governance of the province.
