“Every Municipality Must Work” – Deputy Minister Masemola Calls for Action in North West

Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Dr. Namane Dickson Masemola, led a high-level engagement session in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District under the theme, “Every Municipality Must Work.” The initiative focused on strengthening municipalities’ capacity to meet their constitutional obligations and improve service delivery across the province.

The session brought together key stakeholders, including CoGHSTA MEC. Gaoage Oageng Molapisi, Finance MEC Kenetswe Norah Mosenogi, Executive Mayors, Mayors, Speakers, Members of Mayoral Committees (MMCs), Municipal Managers, and the Provincial House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders, led by Kgosi Maotwe.

Deputy Minister Masemola emphasized the critical need for municipalities to rise to the challenge of delivering quality services to communities. He stressed the importance of accountability, effective governance, and collaboration, stating that functional municipalities are vital for socio-economic development and community well-being.

“Every municipality must work—this is not just a slogan, but a call to action. Municipalities are the closest sphere of government to the people, and it is their responsibility to deliver on their constitutional mandate,” Dr Masemola

North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi reinforced this message by urging municipalities to address challenges such as poor infrastructure and service backlogs, while Mokgosi highlighted the role of sound financial management in ensuring sustainable and efficient service delivery.

The session served as a platform for robust discussions on governance, accountability, and the collaboration needed to ensure municipalities effectively serve their communities. This initiative forms part of CoGTA’s ongoing efforts to transform local government and build stronger municipalities across South Africa.
