Executive Mayor Cllr Shiela Mabale-Huma Leads United Stand Against Gender-Based Violence in Rustenburg

The fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) took centre stage today as Executive Mayor Cllr Shiela Mabale-Huma joined scores of residents, civil society organisations, and community leaders in a peaceful but powerful march through the streets of Rustenburg.

The march formed part of ongoing efforts to raise awareness and reinforce the city’s commitment to ending the scourge of GBV, which continues to affect families and communities across the municipality.

Walking in solidarity with survivors, activists, and concerned residents, the Executive Mayor reaffirmed the Rustenburg Local Municipality’s resolve to protect vulnerable groups and strengthen programmes aimed at prevention, support, and community empowerment.

“Gender-Based Violence is a crisis that affects every family and every community. We cannot remain silent. Today, we walk for justice, for protection, and for the dignity of all women and children,” said Mayor Mabale-Huma during her address to participants.

She emphasized the need for collective action, noting that the municipality will intensify its collaboration with key partners, including law enforcement agencies, community organisations, and social development structures, to ensure that awareness, prevention, and support interventions remain central to the city’s agenda.

The march ended with a call for communities to remain vigilant, report incidents of abuse, and actively participate in initiatives designed to create safer environments for women, children, and all vulnerable individuals.

The City of Rustenburg has committed to sustaining these efforts throughout the year, reinforcing the message that GBV has no place in society and that united communities can drive meaningful change.
