The North West Department of Human Settlements has announced the completion of the first phase of a significant housing project aimed at restoring the community of Deelpan in the Tswaing Local Municipality. Following heavy rainfall that submerged over 75% of the village, leaving it devastated, the government has undertaken integrated efforts to rebuild and uplift the affected residents.
Ms. Dineo Lolokwane, the Departmental Spokesperson, emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring the dignity of the people, as outlined in the constitution and the freedom charter. The completion of 103 houses marks a crucial milestone in this endeavor. Lolokwane confirmed that the official handover ceremony is scheduled to take place in the near future.

Furthermore, this housing initiative is part of a larger project announced by the North West Acting Premier, Patrick Dumile Nono Maloyi, during his State of the Province Address. A total of 317 houses are planned for construction, thanks to the generous donation of land by Kgosi Kogodi Molete of Bakolobeng and his Traditional Council.
Recent progress in the area was assessed by Deputy Minister Pinky Kenana, responsible for Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation. Kenana expressed satisfaction with the strides made, acknowledging the dedication of the intervention team to the project. She highlighted the importance of key interventions and initiatives, particularly the construction of houses to provide shelter for those affected by the floods. Efforts are also underway to improve water and sanitation facilities, ensuring the basic needs of the community are met.
The completion of the first phase of housing construction signifies a significant step forward in the restoration and rebuilding process for the Deelpan community. As the project continues, it is poised to bring hope and stability to the lives of those affected by the devastating floods of 2022.
