Former North West Development Corporation (NWDC) Chief Financial Officer Kudakwashe Mpofu (33) will spend the weekend behind bars after his arrest on charges of fraud.
Mpofu, a Zimbabwean national, was apprehended on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, in Mahikeng by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit. Authorities allege that Mpofu used a counterfeit South African permanent residency permit to secure employment at the NWDC in March 2023.

He initially served as an asset manager before being promoted to acting CFO and later permanently appointed to the position. During his tenure, Mpofu reportedly earned over R3 million in salary.
The suspect appeared before the Mmabatho Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. The matter has been postponed to February 3, 2025, for a formal bail hearing.

Brigadier Silas Munzhedzi, acting Provincial Head of the Hawks in North West, commended the collaboration between the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority, which led to Mpofu’s arrest.
“This case highlights our commitment to combating fraud and ensuring justice is served,” said Munzhedzi.

Dr. Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in North West, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of protecting the credibility of public institutions.
Mpofu remains in custody as investigations continue.
