The nationwide 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign officially commenced today, November 25, 2024, with a dynamic launch event in Rustenburg. The initiative, which aims to combat gender-based violence (GBV) and foster safer communities, brought together leaders, activists, and community members.

The day began with a march from the Rustenburg Taxi Rank to the Rustenburg Library, drawing attention to the plight of victims of violence. Participants carried banners and raised their voices in solidarity, ending the procession at the Rustenburg Civic Center for a program of speeches and cultural performances.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile, delivering the keynote address, highlighted the government’s dual focus on prevention and economic empowerment as critical tools in breaking cycles of abuse. “Financial independence is a cornerstone of empowerment, and by addressing economic challenges, we can significantly reduce vulnerability to violence,” he said.

North West Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi praised the cultural performances, describing them as a powerful reminder of community resilience. “Our unity and strength as a people are reflected in these performances, which inspire hope and perseverance,” Mokgosi remarked.

Endless Ramashu from the Provincial Council on AIDS underscored the interconnected challenges of violence and health, urging communities to prioritize safe spaces. “This fight is not just about violence; it’s about preserving lives and restoring dignity,” she emphasized.

Deputy Minister Mmapaseka Steve Letsike and MEC of Social Development Sussana Dantjie skillfully managed the program, ensuring that the event’s message resonated with attendees.

As the campaign unfolds over the next 16 days, South Africans are called to action to challenge societal norms that perpetuate violence and advocate for equality and safety for all.
The Rustenburg launch has set a powerful precedent, reaffirming the nation’s collective commitment to eradicating GBV and fostering a culture of mutual respect and accountability.
