Heavy Rains Cause Damage in Sun City and Moses Kotane Hospital

Torrential rains on Saturday 04 January 2025 left a trail of destruction in parts of the North West Province, with Sun City and Moses Kotane Hospital among the hardest hit.

On Saturday, heavy downpours damaged several vehicles parked at a Sun City parking lot, causing frustration and losses for car owners. In nearby Ledig, some residents were left devastated as floodwaters entered their homes, damaging property.

The rains also impacted Moses Kotane Hospital, where the maternity section experienced flooding. Water entered through a sliding door and a blocked drain, temporarily disrupting the area. However, the hospital’s cleaning and maintenance teams swiftly resolved the issue, restoring the section to normal within hours.

Hospital CEO Khumisho Mmolawa reassured the public that maternity services were not interrupted and no patients were affected. “We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all our patients and staff. A review of the drainage systems is underway to prevent similar incidents in the future,” Mmolawa said.

The South African Weather Service has cautioned that heavy rains will persist in the North West until Wednesday. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, particularly those in flood-prone areas, and to report emergencies to local authorities.

As the province braces for further downpours, emergency services remain on standby to assist affected communities.
