IEC Prepares for Main Voting Day Following Successful Special Votes

With the conclusion of special votes, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has reflected on the valuable lessons learned over the past two days, aiming to enhance operations and ensure a positive voter experience for the main election day on May 29, 2024. The Commission expressed satisfaction with the feedback received and pledged to implement refinements that will contribute to a seamless voting process.

In a statement issued this evening, the IEC urged the remaining 26 million eligible voters to exercise their democratic right and participate in the elections tomorrow. Special voting closed promptly at 9:00 PM yesterday, marking the end of a crucial phase in the electoral process.

Amidst the preparations, stories of determination and commitment to vote have emerged. Seokaditshego Malesa, a 57-year-old from Motlhabeng village near Mafikeng, exemplified this spirit when she was carried by relatives to Tetlano Secondary School voting station. Although she had not applied for a home visit, Malesa was determined to cast her special vote, illustrating the significance of every voter’s voice in shaping the country’s future.

Observers from the Moral Regeneration Movement, accredited by the IEC under the Mahlasedi Foundation NPC, commended the Commission for its efforts to uphold the integrity of the electoral process. “We applaud the IEC for the extraordinary measures implemented to ensure free and fair elections,” said MRM NorthWestCoordinator, Pastor Lesiba Kgwele, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in maintaining public trust.

Looking ahead to Wednesday’s main voting day, the IEC confirmed that the extensive network of 23,292 voting stations nationwide will open promptly at 07:00 AM and close at 21:00 PM. Emphasizing inclusivity, the Commission assured voters that those present at the voting station by closing time will be allowed to cast their ballots, reaffirming the commitment to accommodating all eligible voters.
