Illegal Miner Dies at Klerksdorp Hospital Following Stilfontein Arrest

The North West Department of Health has confirmed the death of one of the illegal miners admitted to Klerksdorp/Tshepong Tertiary Hospital in the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District.

The patient, identified as Mr. Koali Rankomo, passed away on Monday, 20 January 2025, at approximately 4:23 am. Rankomo was admitted to the facility after being diagnosed with gastroenteritis and dehydration.

Rankomo was among 33 suspected illegal miners arrested last week during a National Rescue Operation at a disused mine in Stilfontein. All the detainees were admitted to the hospital under police guard for medical attention.

The Department of Health has confirmed that 32 suspected illegal miners remain under its care at the hospital, with strict police monitoring in place.

Authorities are yet to release further details regarding Rankomo’s death or whether it will impact ongoing investigations into illegal mining operations in the area.

The Department has assured the public that the situation is under control and that law enforcement continues to keep a “hawkish eye” on the remaining detainees to prevent any security breaches.

Investigations into illegal mining activities and related arrests are ongoing.
