Joint Efforts to Address Water Supply Challenges in Hammanskraal

Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu, in collaboration with various government officials and stakeholders, conducted a comprehensive assessment at the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Plant. This initiative, aimed at addressing longstanding water supply challenges, particularly in Hammanskraal, signifies a concerted effort towards improving water quality and reliability in the region.

The visit to the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Plant, owned and managed by the City of Tshwane, highlighted the progress made in ongoing upgrade works. These upgrades, a result of collaborative efforts between Minister Mchunu and City of Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink, signify a pivotal step towards optimizing plant operations in alignment with sector standards.

Notably, the appointment of the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) to undertake major refurbishment works underscores the commitment to enhance infrastructure and combat inefficiencies in waste water treatment. The project includes critical measures to address issues of vandalism and theft, such as the installation of a 1000-meter fence to safeguard the facility.

Furthermore, the delegation visited the launch site of a new 5-mega-litre package plant at Magalies Water’s Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant, marking the commencement of preparations for plant installation. Minister Mchunu emphasized the significance of this milestone, particularly in light of previous challenges faced by the community.

Addressing concerns regarding water quality during the cholera outbreak, Minister Mchunu reiterated the impeccable track record of Magalies Water. Sandile Mkhize, Chief Executive of Magalies Water, echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence in the partnership with the City of Tshwane and the Department of Water and Sanitation.

During a public engagement session at the Nelson Mandela Hall, Minister Mchunu underscored the importance of collective action in achieving lasting solutions to water challenges. He urged community support and collaboration, emphasizing the need to refrain from paying protection fees to disruptive groups.

This collaborative endeavor exemplifies the shared commitment of stakeholders in addressing water supply challenges and improving the quality of life for communities across South Africa. With ongoing efforts and partnerships, the vision of accessible, reliable, and sustainable water supply for all remains within reach.
