The Bafokeng Regional Court in Tlhabane has sentenced 31-year-old Philani Daka to 30 years of direct imprisonment for the brutal murders of his girlfriend, 37-year-old Lebogang Mokwena, and her mother, 73-year-old Msesi Mokwena.

The murders took place on 14 January 2024 at Lefaragatlhe Village. During a heated argument at the Mokwena family home, Daka stabbed his girlfriend multiple times. When her mother tried to intervene, she was also fatally stabbed.

Daka was arrested on 8 December 2024 and later confessed, pleading guilty to both charges. The court handed down 20 years’ imprisonment for the murder of Lebogang Mokwena and 10 years for the murder of Msesi Mokwena. Five years of the second sentence will run concurrently, resulting in an effective sentence of 25 years behind bars.

In addition, Daka was declared unfit to possess a firearm, and parole consideration will only occur in consultation with the victims’ families.

State Prosecutor Advocate Zola Mpayipheli emphasised the gravity of the crimes and their devastating impact on society, particularly in the context of gender-based violence, urging the court to impose a severe sentence.
Detective Warrant Officer Khomotjo Matlala successfully opposed bail following Daka’s arrest.
Acting Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2 Commissioner, Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae, welcomed the sentencing, commending the investigation team, prosecution, and witnesses for their dedication. Brigadier Ntoagae reiterated the SAPS’s unwavering stance against gender-based crimes and assured communities of continued efforts to ensure justice for victims.
