Lokaleng – Road Z422 worth more than R123 million officially opened

In a grand ceremony, the MEC for Public Works and Roads, Gaoage Oageng Molapisi, alongside the Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Tshepiso Mphehlo, and the Head of Department (HOD), Moss Kgantsi, officially opened and handed over Road Z422 at Lokaleng. This significant infrastructure development is set to have a lasting impact on the region.

The Road Z422 project, with a total value of R 123,175,287.20 was successfully completed over an 18-month period, and its realization was made possible through the Equitable Share funding mechanism. Phase 1 of the project, spanning 15 kilometers from the Albert Luthuli intersection through Lokaleng and Mogosane to Tlapeng villages, is a crucial component of the 29.5-kilometer long low standard unpaved rural collector road encircling rural areas with extensive agricultural activities.

During the inauguration ceremony, MEC Molapisi emphasized the significance of road infrastructure in the development of the region, stating, “The 2023 October Transport Month (OTM) theme points to the necessity and urgency with which government must proceed in the implementation of road infrastructure. Through this year’s campaign, we as the government seek to prioritize building infrastructure that stimulates social emancipation and an economy that works, creating jobs and saving lives and livelihoods.”

The project also prioritized subcontracting opportunities, with a total expenditure of R 20,840,176.07 (VAT included) directed towards subcontractors. This resulted in 49 beneficiaries, accounting for 32% of the contract value spent on subcontractors, contributing to local economic development.

Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Tshepiso Mphehlo, hailed the investment in roads infrastructure as an indicator of the Department of Public Works and Roads’ commitment to reposition and rebuild Mahikeng.

Representatives of the local tribal authorities also expressed their gratitude for the project. Kgosi Phenyo Motshegare stated, “We, as the tribal authority, thank the department for responding to the needs of the people. This road will bring about developments in our villages and ultimately attract investment.”

Kgosi Tlotlo Seru praised the exemplary leadership of the Tribal Authority, highlighting the project’s efficient completion within the prescribed period. He called it a motivation and a lesson for other communities.

The inauguration of Road Z422 in Lokaleng stands as a testament to the commitment of the government and local authorities to infrastructure development and economic growth in the Mahikeng region. This project is poised to improve transportation, stimulate local economies, and enhance the overall quality of life for the people in the area.
