The Madibeng Local Municipality, in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Madibeng Traffic, Madibeng Fire and Disaster Management, and the Bojanala District Municipality, conducted a significant food safety compliance campaign in the Brits Central Business District (CBD) on Monday – 18 November 2024.

This initiative, aimed at ensuring public health and safety, involved inspections of local food stores to assess their adherence to food safety regulations. Noncompliant stores were closed, and expired or substandard food items were confiscated and destroyed.

The campaign aligns with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent pronouncements on food safety made on Friday, 15 November 2024. The President emphasized the importance of enforcing regulations in spaza shops and other local food outlets to protect consumers from health risks associated with unsafe food products.

Officials stated that the operation sends a strong message to businesses to prioritize compliance with food safety standards.

Community members applauded the initiative, expressing relief that action was being taken to ensure the quality and safety of food sold in the area.

The municipality has urged business owners to familiarize themselves with food safety regulations and to comply with the necessary standards to avoid closure or penalties. Further inspections are planned.
