Ventersdorp police have arrested a 24-year-old man following a shocking incident involving the theft of an ambulance with a patient on board. The arrest took place in the early hours of Friday, 27 December 2024, at Tshing Location, near Ventersdorp.
According to police reports, the ambulance was stolen late Thursday night, 26 December 2024, at approximately 23:55. Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) personnel had just received a patient at the local hospital, preparing to transport them to another healthcare facility. While they were engaged in handing over the patient, the suspect reportedly jumped into the vehicle and sped off with the patient still inside.
A swift response from the authorities led to the recovery of the ambulance and the safe rescue of the patient, who was unharmed during the ordeal. The suspect was promptly apprehended and taken into custody.
North West Police Spokesperson According to police spokesperson Col Adéle Myburgh, confirmed the arrest and applauded the officers for their quick action. “This brazen act could have endangered the life of the patient, but thanks to the teamwork of our officers, we managed to recover the ambulance without incident,” Col Myburgh said.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court on charges of theft of a motor vehicle and endangering the life of another person.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing. Authorities are also urging members of the community to come forward with any additional information that may assist in the case.
