MEC Lehari Announces Decrease in Road Fatalities Amidst Vigorous Enforcement Efforts

In a poignant media briefing led by MEC Sello Lehari of the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, a moment of silence was observed to honor the lives tragically lost in road accidents. With solemnity, MEC Lehari extended condolences to the bereaved families, acknowledging the devastating impact of these incidents on the community.

Addressing the concerning trend of lifestyle-related factors contributing to road crashes, MEC Lehari highlighted excessive drinking, speeding, and recklessness as key culprits. However, amidst the grim statistics, there emerged a glimmer of hope – a 2% decrease in fatalities compared to the previous year.

This reduction was attributed to the department’s concerted efforts in enforcing traffic regulations. Regular weekly law enforcement operations, coupled with intensified measures during the October Transport Month, yielded tangible results. Fines were issued for non-compliant drivers, targeting moving violations, transportation of contraband, and unroadworthy vehicles.

A pivotal aspect of the department’s strategy was the introduction of “The Eagles,” a specialized unit tasked with patrolling arterial roads and ensuring strict compliance. Equipped with high-powered vehicles and cutting-edge technologies, The Eagles played a crucial role in reducing crashes across various districts.

MEC Lehari underscored the efficacy of The Eagles, citing significant decreases in crash numbers in regions such as Bojanala and Ngaka Modiri Molema. However, he also highlighted concerning trends, particularly the rise in pedestrian fatalities, especially during nighttime hours.

Of the 92 fatalities recorded during the period, 42 were women, 46 were men, and tragically, two infants lost their lives. Despite these sobering statistics, MEC Lehari remained steadfast in his commitment to road safety, citing a steady reduction in fatalities over the past five years.
