MEC Lenkopane Launches 2024 Liquor Licence Renewal Period in Rustenburg

The MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Conservation, and Tourism, Bitsa Lenkopane, alongside Mohammed Karani, MMC for Special Programmes at Bojanala District Municipality, officially kicked off the 2024 Liquor Licence Renewal period today at the Tlhabane Community Hall in Rustenburg.

Addressing liquor traders and community members, MEC Lenkopane highlighted the importance of this renewal period, stressing that it aims to promote responsible trading and ensure compliance with the National Liquor Act No. 27 of 1989, while also addressing ongoing challenges within the sector.

“The liquor industry plays a significant role in contributing to the mainstream economy. We must ensure that traders comply with legislation. The liquor industry is a key driver in job creation and provincial economic growth, contributing substantially to our province’s fiscal revenue,” Lenkopane said.

She emphasized that illegal traders, particularly those operating beyond legal hours or selling alcohol to underage individuals, will face serious penalties. “Such violations will not be tolerated, and the law will take its course,” she warned.

MEC Lenkopane also voiced concerns about the increasing number of fraudulent liquor licenses, urging traders to stay vigilant against scams. “We encourage traders to confirm the legitimacy of any notices with the department before making any payments,” she said.

In addition to discussing compliance, Lenkopane addressed disruptions that have occurred during liquor board sittings, calling on liquor traders to allow the administrative processes to function smoothly. “We are aware of the administrative challenges and are working diligently to improve the license application process and reduce turnaround times for responses,” she assured.

Traders with expired or lapsed licenses were encouraged to renew them promptly to remain in compliance with the law and continue operating without interruption.

This launch marks the beginning of the 2024 renewal period, during which liquor traders across the province will be expected to update their licenses to align with the regulatory framework.

The event, attended by key stakeholders, is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to promote responsible liquor trading while boosting the local economy and job creation in the North West Province.
