Minister Senzo Mchunu Launches Phase 2 of Pilanesberg Bulk Water Supply Project in Rustenburg

Minister Senzo Mchunu of the Department of Water and Sanitation, accompanied by Deputy Minister Judith Tshabalala, North West Acting Premier Nono Maloyi, and Rustenburg Local Municipality Executive Mayor Sheila Mabale-Huma, inaugurated Phase 2 of the Pilanesberg Bulk Water Supply Project in Mafenya, Chaneng. This launch marks a significant milestone in the North West Provincial Government’s Accelerated Service Delivery Programme, Thuntsha Lerole.

Funded under the Department of Water and Sanitation’s Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (RBIG), the Phase 2 project includes key components such as the construction of a 30ML Tlhabane reservoir, Mafenya pump station, and a 28km pipeline to the Tlhabane reservoir. Minister Mchunu confirmed the completion of the reservoir construction and announced that the final connection of a 2-kilometer pipeline will soon ensure water delivery to Rustenburg communities.

“The state-of-the-art pump station, equipped with three pumps including a reserve, represents a significant enhancement in our province’s water infrastructure,” stated Minister Mchunu. “By September, Phase 2 will resolve water scarcity issues, paving the way for Phase 3 of the Magalies Water Master Plan. This next phase extends water access to municipalities such as Kgetleng Rivier, Ramotshere Moiloa, and Supingstad near the Botswana border.”

Acting Premier Nono Maloyi emphasized the importance of safeguarding infrastructure against disruptions, cautioning against interference by what he termed the “construction mafia” that has impeded progress on vital projects. He urged community vigilance to ensure uninterrupted water supply.

In total, 63,238 households across Rustenburg Local Municipality, including areas like Phokeng, Boitekong, and Waterval, stand to benefit from improved water access facilitated by the project. Moreover, Phase 2 has already generated 259 local jobs, contributing to economic empowerment within the community.

The launch of Phase 2 of the Pilanesberg Bulk Water Supply Project underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing water infrastructure and ensuring sustainable service delivery to communities across the North West Province.

For further updates on the project’s progress and future developments, residents are encouraged to engage with local authorities and stay informed through official channels.
