Moses Kotane Local Municipality Launches Internship Programme to Empower Local Graduates

Moses Kotane Local Municipality officially launched a new internship programme on Monday, 12 May 2025. The programme, initiated in partnership with Hamonate Consulting and funded by BANKSETA, was introduced during an induction session held for 30 selected graduates.

This initiative forms part of the Municipality’s continued commitment to youth empowerment and skills development, building on the success of a similar programme in 2015, where all participants gained employment, with 80% absorbed internally by the Municipality. The 2025 programme aims to replicate and expand this success by equipping young graduates with practical work experience that enhances their employability.

Coordinated by Hamonate Consulting and backed financially by BANKSETA, the internship targets university and college graduates who hold Diplomas and Degrees but lack the workplace experience often required by employers. Following a transparent recruitment process based on verified qualifications and officially stamped academic transcripts, 30 graduates were selected for this year’s intake.

The interns come from diverse academic backgrounds, including Public Management, Civil Engineering, Marketing, Public Relations, Labour Relations, Risk Management, Town Planning, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Water Care. They will be placed across various departments within the Municipality for a 12-month practical training period, commencing on 1 June 2025.

Speaking at the induction, Mr. Lekgotla Motlhabane, Skills Development Manager at Moses Kotane Local Municipality, emphasized the Municipality’s dedication to bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application.

“This programme is a response to the urgent need to empower our youth with relevant skills that meet the demands of the labour market,” said Motlhabane. “It’s not just about giving young people jobs for a year – it’s about shaping a generation that is work-ready and competitive.”

A representative from BANKSETA further outlined the organisation’s critical role in the programme. This includes funding support, accrediting training providers, and overseeing monitoring and evaluation to ensure alignment with national education and auditing standards.

Interns were also briefed on professional expectations such as time management, compliance with workplace policies, and the importance of daily timesheet reporting to track progress.

The 2025 internship programme is more than a job placement effort—it’s a strategic investment in local capacity-building and sustainable development. By revisiting a proven model from 2015 and adapting it to current economic challenges, Moses Kotane Local Municipality continues to lead by example in driving youth development and unlocking opportunities for the future workforce.
