A 29-year-old motorist is set to appear before the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 27 December 2024, facing charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol. The arrest follows a tragic accident that claimed the life of a 5-year-old girl and left two others seriously injured.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, 25 December 2024, in Kosmos at Simon Bekker Avenue, Hartbeespoortdam. According to reports, the motorist was driving a black Volkswagen Amarok bakkie when it collided with a mother and her two children.
Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) paramedics declared the 5-year-old girl dead at the scene. Her mother, aged 22, sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition. The youngest victim, a baby girl, was also hospitalized and is reported to be in serious condition.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda du Plessis confirmed the motorist’s arrest, stating, “Preliminary investigations suggest that alcohol may have been a contributing factor to this devastating accident. We will ensure a thorough investigation and that justice is served.”
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the Hartbeespoortdam community, particularly during the festive season. Community leaders and residents have called for stricter measures to curb drunk driving and prevent similar tragedies.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulations to avoid further loss of life during the holiday period.
The suspect remains in police custody and will be formally charged in court. Further updates on the condition of the injured victims are awaited.
