The North West MEC for Health, Sello Lehari, has called for the newly revamped Boitekong Clinic in the Bojanala District Municipality to operate 24 hours a day. The facility, which underwent renovations worth over R10 million, was officially reopened today in a ceremony attended by departmental management and key stakeholders.

MEC Lehari issued a strong directive to senior officials, instructing them to ensure the clinic transitions to a 24-hour service. He emphasized that he would return in April for a progress report, warning that “heads will roll” should there be no positive developments.

Boitekong Clinic, first opened in 1995, recently underwent significant refurbishments funded by multiple partners. The Gift of the Givers Foundation installed perimeter fencing, gates, a guardhouse, ceilings, and air conditioners. Sibanye Stillwater Mine repaired the leaking roof, revamped flooring, painted the facility, upgraded plumbing, and installed WiFi and a service board. Bonitas Medical Fund contributed a borehole and water tanks, while PEPFAR/ANOVA constructed an administration block.

Speaking at the reopening, MEC Lehari highlighted the provincial government’s commitment to improving healthcare services.
“In my maiden budget speech on 30 July 2024, the Department committed to officially opening several healthcare facilities to accelerate service delivery,” he stated.

“We are steadfast in keeping that promise, despite various challenges,” he added, noting that while some obstacles are beyond their control, those that can be addressed will be tackled promptly.
MEC Lehari expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their contributions to the clinic’s refurbishment.

“I would like to, on behalf of the government and community members, thank all stakeholders for ensuring this facility becomes operational. It is through such collaborations that we ensure our communities receive the care they deserve,” he said.
Demand for Extended Operating Hours
Boitekong Clinic, originally managed by the Rustenburg Local Municipality, was handed over to the provincial Department of Health in 2013. The facility currently operates from 7 AM to 7 PM, seven days a week. However, with a growing catchment population of 54,683 in 2025 it must be 24 hour operation centre.
