Four talented young athletes from Rustenburg, North West, have returned home as pioneers after proudly representing South Africa at the International Cheer Union (ICU) World Championships in Orlando, USA.
Larona Pooe (13) from Sunrise View Secondary School, Nicoleen Maluleka and Tshiamo Nkele from Grenswag Hoërskool, and Oratile Mmeti from Geelhoutpark High School formed part of South Africa’s first-ever youth all-girls cheerleading team to compete on the world stage.
Their historic participation was made possible through the full support of the North West Department of Sports & Recreation, which covered all expenses including attire, flights, training, and registration fees.
George Marindi, Chief Director of Sports & Recreation, commended the young athletes:
“The provincial government is incredibly excited to have been able to assist these talented young individuals in their journey to represent South Africa on this prestigious global platform. Their success at the ICU World Championships is a testament to their hard work and dedication, starting from their local club.”
The ICU World Championships, the most prestigious event in the cheerleading world, brings together teams from across the globe to showcase routines combining dance, tumbling, acrobatics, and stunts.
The achievements of Larona, Nicoleen, Tshiamo, and Oratile reflect the growing prominence of cheerleading in South Africa and highlight the importance of investing in youth development. Their success serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes across the North West Province.
