The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, led by MEC Lenkopane, marked World Consumer Rights Day by addressing unfair practices in the funeral industry. The event, held at Chiefs Court in Taung Local Municipality, highlighted consumer exploitation, particularly among the elderly.

Joined by Kgosi Tshepo Mankuroane, local councillors, and key consumer regulators, MEC Lenkopane condemned funeral parlours that fail to honour policies and delay payouts. She stressed the need for fairness and transparency, warning against exploitative insurance brokers.

The MEC announced stricter enforcement, complaint mechanisms, and compliance inspections in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District. Regulatory bodies, including ICASA and the Ombud Council, pledged to uphold consumer rights.

Consumers were urged to report violations, while the department called on stakeholders to ensure ethical business practices. “We must protect our people from exploitation,” said MEC Lenkopane.
