North West Department of Health Urges Men and Boys to Utilize Free Medical Circumcision Services

The North West Department of Health is calling on men and boys, starting from the age of 10, to take advantage of the free, safe, and voluntary medical male circumcision services available at healthcare facilities across the province.

With the winter season approaching, the department anticipates an increase in complications related to male circumcision due to illegal initiation schools or botched procedures, which can pose significant health risks to initiates.

Medical researchers have confirmed that male circumcision can reduce the risk of HIV transmission and other sexually transmitted infections by up to 60%. Therefore, men and boys over the age of 10 are encouraged to visit their nearest health facility for more information or to book an appointment for this free and safe service.

It is important to note that male medical circumcision is not a substitute for practicing safe sex. The use of condoms remains a highly recommended method for preventing sexually transmitted infections, alongside other preventative measures and abstinence.

In the 2023/24 financial year, the North West Department of Health performed 57,766 medical male circumcisions, with the Ngaka Modiri Molema District leading the efforts with 10,728 procedures. The department collaborates with development partners such as Lamula Health Service, Bokamoso Social Upliftment, Right to Care, and Southern Health Foundation to ensure the successful rollout of this service.

For more information or to book an appointment, men and boys are urged to visit their nearest healthcare facility and take proactive steps toward safeguarding their health.
