In an unexpected turn of events, the North West Department of Public Works and Roads has announced a delay in the implementation of the Routine Roads Maintenance Project. The decision to postpone the project stems from administrative-related issues that have surfaced within the department.
Acting Head of Department (HOD), Sifiso Diko, assured the public that despite the setback, the department remains steadfast in its commitment to implementing the Routine Roads Maintenance Project. Diko emphasized that the delay is a result of careful consideration of the available budget, highlighting the significant budget cut of over one-hundred-and-fifty million rands (R150m) in the 2023/2024 financial year.

“Our priority is to ensure the smooth exit of current participants in the Vuk’phile Contractor Development Programme in accordance with our ‘Exit Strategy,'” stated Diko. Ongoing communication with programme participants is underway, and the department will fulfill its obligations to appointed main contractors.
The department clarified that no work on the Routine Roads Maintenance Project has commenced, refuting any claims of suspension after meeting with stakeholders. Diko cautioned against relying on statements made by individuals not officially appointed to communicate on behalf of the department.

“The Department advises the public to avoid overreliance on statements made by individuals not appointed to officially communicate on behalf of the Department. We reiterate our position that threats against officials of the Department and the closing of the Head Office to raise concerns is unacceptable,” warned Diko.
Despite the delay, the North West Department of Public Works and Roads remains committed to the successful execution of the Routine Roads Maintenance Project, pending resolution of the administrative challenges and financial constraints. The department assures the public that transparent communication will be maintained throughout the process, urging stakeholders to stay informed through official channels.
