North West Development Corporation CFO Resigns Amid Fraud Allegations

The Department of Economic Development, Environment Conservation, and Tourism (DEDECT) in the North West Province has confirmed the resignation of Kudakwashe Mpofu, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the North West Development Corporation (NWDC), with immediate effect. Mpofu’s departure follows reports alleging fraudulent acquisition of his residence permit.

On March 17, 2024, Minister of Home Affairs, Aron Motsoaledi, verified to Times Live and other media outlets that Mpofu, a Zimbabwean citizen, did not obtain his residence permit through the Department of Home Affairs. Minister Motsoaledi stated, “According to our records, Mr. Kudakwashe Mpofu’s permanent residence document is fraudulent and was not issued by the Department of Home Affairs, and we do not know where he obtained it.”

In response to the Minister’s revelation, DEDECT, under the leadership of MEC Galebekwe Virginia Tsotso Tlhapi, expressed readiness to collaborate with law enforcement agencies investigating the matter. MEC Tlhapi affirmed, “As a department, we have been following this matter since last week.”

The resignation of Mpofu and the subsequent investigation underscore the commitment of the North West provincial government to uphold integrity and accountability in public office. DEDECT aims to ensure transparency and ethical conduct within its institutions, demonstrating a zero-tolerance approach to fraud and malpractice.

The NWDC plays a crucial role in economic development and investment promotion within the North West Province. The resignation of its CFO amid allegations of fraud raises concerns about governance and compliance standards within the corporation.

Efforts to address the situation are underway, with DEDECT pledging full cooperation with law enforcement authorities to ascertain the facts and take appropriate action. As the investigation progresses, stakeholders await further updates on the outcome and implications for the NWDC’s leadership and operations.
