North West Education MEC Urges Parental Involvement and Community Support for Exam Readiness

In an effort to strengthen support for learners during this year’s examination period, North West Education MEC Viola Motsumi convened a critical engagement with School Governing Bodies (SGBs) and ward councillors from underperforming schools. The session, held at Victory Primary School in Mahikeng, targeted SGBs in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District, focusing on ways to boost learner performance through greater community involvement.

The MEC appealed to parents to step forward and participate in school incubation camps, which require more hands-on support to operate efficiently. These camps provide focused learning environments for learners in preparation for their exams, and additional manpower is crucial to ensure they run smoothly.

Highlighting the importance of a holistic approach, MEC Motsumi emphasized the need for SGBs to shift their focus beyond administrative tasks, stressing that their primary responsibility is to improve educational outcomes.

“I urge every SGB member to prioritise learners’ best interests. We need SGBs that are dedicated to strengthening the curriculum and actively supporting teaching and learning,” she stated. “Since launching our last push campaign in September, we have called on parents and the community to rally behind our learners. Now, it’s time to put those words into action, knowing it truly takes a village to raise a child.”

The MEC’s message is part of a province-wide initiative, with similar engagement sessions being held across all four districts to foster collaboration and address challenges in education comprehensively.

The Department of Education is encouraged by the commitment shown by newly-elected SGBs at schools facing performance challenges. Their involvement is expected to be pivotal in enhancing school management, addressing community needs, and fostering an environment where learners can excel.
