NORTH WEST HEALTH DEPARTMENT ENGAGES US CONSULATE FOLLOWING FUNDING CUTS

The North West MEC for Health, Sello Lehari, together with the department’s Executive Management team, has met with the United States Consul General, Stephannie Bunce, and her delegation to discuss the impact of recent funding cuts on provincial health programmes.

The meeting took place after the delegation visited Lonely Park Clinic, where they assessed the clinic’s operations and the potential implications of the funding freeze. Discussions centred around budget disruptions resulting from the Executive Order signed by US President Donald Trump Jnr in January this year.

The Executive Order has led to a freeze on financial aid and the withdrawal of over 600 personnel who were providing technical support to South Africa’s health programmes through United States agencies such as PEPFAR and UNAIDS.

The United States has historically played a critical role in supporting health interventions in South Africa by providing both monetary and technical assistance aimed at combating diseases such as HIV/AIDS and TB.

During the bilateral engagement, both parties deliberated on the need for adjustments and improved planning to continue delivering high-care healthcare services despite the abrupt funding cuts. The North West Department of Health has been compelled to reprioritise and reallocate its budget to fill the gaps left by the withdrawal of financial and technical support.

According to departmental estimates, an additional R201,514,336.40 is required to sustain health services, with R108,598,336.40 needed for human resource shortfalls and R2,916,000 for material resources.

Universal access to high-quality, comprehensive health care remains a key determinant in ensuring that every citizen in the North West Province has the maximum opportunity to live a productive and long life. However, the department is concerned that the cuts may negatively impact progress made in fighting HIV, TB, and other communicable diseases.

In 2023 alone, the province reported 549,559 people living with HIV, with a steady increase noted across all four districts.

Both teams committed to maintaining constant engagement to enhance support in ways that remain mutually beneficial for the people of the North West and the broader partnership between South Africa and the United States.
