The North West Province is gearing up to host a significant event aimed at fostering ethical leadership within local government. Scheduled to take place at the ANEW Hunters Rest Hotel outside Rustenburg on Friday, the Local Government Ethical Leadership Initiative (LGELI) Code workshop will bring together key stakeholders, including Chairpersons of Municipal Public Accounts Committees (MPAC), traditional leaders, business figures, church leaders, and representatives from civil society organizations.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) North West Interim Committee, follows the recent launch of the LGELI Code by Ms. Thembi Nkadimeng, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA). Pastor Lesiba Kgwele, Convenor of the MRM North West Interim Committee, emphasized that the workshop aims to promote ethical leadership principles, foster community-centered governance approaches, enhance service delivery, and promote accountability.

“With a target of engaging 100 participants, the workshop seeks to popularize the LGELI Code and lay the groundwork for its implementation across municipal councils,” Pastor Kgwele explained. He emphasized the Code’s role in enhancing accountability and bridging the trust gap between councillors and communities.
The event will feature notable speakers, including Motlalepula Rosho, the MEC for Finance, who will represent COGTA MEC and Acting Premier Nono Maloyi. Additionally, Cllr Khumalo Molefe, Chairperson of SALGA North West, Israel Ndou, Head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in the North West, Rudi Venter from the Auditor General of South Africa, and Job Dliso, MPL and Chairperson of the Select Committee on Public Accounts in the North West Provincial legislature, will address the audience.

Key partners involved in developing the LGELI Code include the Moral Regeneration Movement, the Ethics Institute, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA). Their collaborative efforts have led to the formulation of a comprehensive framework aimed at promoting integrity and transparency within local government structures.
The workshop signifies a proactive step towards instilling a culture of ethical leadership and accountability within municipal governance, ultimately serving the interests of communities across the North West Province.
