North West Welcomes 89 New Year’s Day Babies

The North West Department of Health has proudly announced the arrival of 89 healthy babies born across the province on New Year’s Day, 01 January 2025. The newborns, described as “bouncing and healthy,” include 49 boys and 40 girls, with all mothers and their bundles of joy reported to be in stable condition. Some families have already reunited to celebrate the joyous additions to their households.

Among the mothers is the youngest, a 16-year-old from the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district, underscoring a critical issue of underage pregnancies.

In response, MEC for Health, Sello Lehari, has mandated district Chief Directors to address challenges related to underage motherhood and cases of unreported sexual abuse. Speaking on the matter, MEC Lehari emphasized the urgency of protecting young girls and holding perpetrators accountable.

“As you heard the Premier during his visit to Joe Morolong Memorial Hospital yesterday, we must take a tougher stance against those preying on our young girls. This matter is receiving urgent attention, and I will personally follow up next week to fast-track all related processes,” said MEC Lehari.

The Department of Health extended its gratitude to the health professionals, including EMS personnel, nurses, and doctors, who ensured the safe delivery of all 89 babies. Their dedication and hard work played a vital role in making this milestone a reality.

The New Year’s Day births symbolize hope and renewal for the province, even as authorities intensify efforts to address societal challenges impacting the well-being of young mothers.
