North-West University is set to bestow an honorary doctorate upon Masego Ezekiel ‘Easy’ Matjila, a revered veteran broadcaster and former SABC newsreader, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to South African broadcasting and the promotion of the Setswana language.

Masego Matjila’s illustrious career in broadcasting spans over three decades, beginning as a radio personality for Radio Setswana. This station eventually merged with Radio Mmabatho to become Motsweding FM, where Masego’s influence grew significantly. In his early years, he was instrumental in managing archives for Radio Setswana, the Afrikaans Service, Radio Ndebele (Ikwekwezi FM), and Radio Swazi (Ligwalagwala FM).
Renowned for his broadcasting prowess and linguistic skills, Masego made his mark as a Setswana sports commentator for SABC Topsport (SABC Sports). His versatility saw him transition seamlessly into a prime-time news presenter role, delivering news in Sesotho, Sepedi, and Setswana until his retirement in 2021. Over his tenure at SABC, he also served as a bulletin editor and executive producer, showcasing his leadership and editorial skills.

A passionate advocate for linguistic diversity, Masego tirelessly promoted the inclusion of multilingual youth programs on SABC2, with a particular focus on addressing the underrepresentation of Setswana, Sepedi, and Sesotho-speaking youth. His advocacy and dedication to the craft earned him numerous accolades, including Best News Writer (SABC, 2008) and Commentator of the Year for AFCON 1996.
The honorary doctorate from North-West University is a testament to Masego Matjila’s significant impact on South African society, especially in his efforts to elevate the Sesotho, Sepedi, and Setswana languages within the broadcasting industry.
