The South African Police Service’s High-Density weekly operation, known as “Operation Shanela,” in the North West province has combined forces with Safer Festive Season Operations, resulting in an impressive crackdown on crime to ensure the safety and security of local communities. The operation, which took place from October 16 to October 22, 2023, saw the arrest of 683 suspects for a range of offenses.
These arrests covered a wide spectrum of criminal activities, with suspects apprehended for crimes including drug possession (11), drug dealing (6), rape (13), assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) (114), common assault (59), murder (15), burglary at business and residential premises (46), malicious damage to property (25), driving under the influence of liquor (49), and processing of 89 undocumented foreign nationals by Immigration Officials.

During the course of these operations and extensive searches, law enforcement officers conducted searches on 3,732 individuals, 72 premises, and 1,656 vehicles. Furthermore, the operation led to the closure of 10 unlicensed liquor premises and the inspection of 91 licensed liquor establishments. It also resulted in the confiscation of illicit liquor, a variety of drugs, and seven dangerous weapons.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the Provincial Police Commissioner, expressed his gratitude to all the dedicated members of the force for their unwavering commitment. He emphasized that the increased police presence during the festive season will persist, ensuring that communities across the region are not only safer but also feel secure.
The successful Operation Shanela serves as a testament to the South African Police Service’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens and maintaining law and order, particularly during the festive season when communities are more vulnerable to various forms of crime.
