Over 1,200 Suspects Arrested in North West During #OperationShanela

Law enforcement agencies in the North West Province intensified their crime prevention efforts last week, with the latest round of #OperationShanela II leading to the arrest of 1,267 suspects between Monday, 22 September and Sunday, 28 September 2025.

The province-wide joint operations combined the efforts of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement partners, targeting crime hotspots through a variety of interventions. These included vehicle checkpoints (VCPs), stops and searches, foot and vehicle patrols, as well as compliance inspections at second-hand dealers, scrapyards, recyclers, private security companies, firearm dealers, formal and informal businesses, and farms.

The crackdown yielded significant recoveries, among them 1,777 copper cables, 82 fireworks, five explosive gels, five electric detonators, tobacco products, liquor, and various drugs, including dagga, cocaine, crystal meth, tik, and mandrax.

Authorities also apprehended 76 undocumented persons during the operations. Notably, 456 of the arrests were of wanted suspects, linked to previous crimes through forensic DNA leads.

Provincial police said the results of #OperationShanela II reflected a coordinated approach to tackling crime while sending a strong message of zero tolerance. The operations are expected to continue weekly to strengthen safety and security across the North West.
