Policing Policy: North West Province Takes the Lead

Stakeholder consultation has emerged as a cornerstone in the formulation of effective policies, particularly in the realm of law enforcement and public safety. Acknowledging its significance, the North West Province has taken the initiative to host a two-day Provincial Consultation session on the Draft National Policing Policy in Mahikeng.

In his opening address, Dr. Hans Kekana, Head of Department for the North West Province, emphasized the crucial role of stakeholders in shaping the future of policing in South Africa. He urged attendees to actively participate, underscoring the policy’s potential to redefine the dynamics between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.

“We are encouraged by the enthusiastic participation of stakeholders gathered here today. This session presents an opportunity to ensure that the final policy reflects the needs of the people of the North West Province and the nation as a whole,” remarked Dr. Kekana.

Highlighting the broader objectives, Dr. Kekana reiterated the aim to enhance public safety while fostering a closer bond between law enforcement personnel and the community. He acknowledged the existing challenges in policing nationwide and emphasized the province’s commitment to setting a positive example.

“We aspire to lead by example in rebuilding trust and fostering mutual respect between the police and our communities. Our goal is to restore the dignity of law enforcement and create safer environments for all,” concluded Dr. Kekana.

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Maureen Mphaphuli, Director for Policy Development at the National Civilian Secretariat for Police Service, emphasized the significance of provincial consultations in refining the Draft Policing Policy. She noted that the North West Province is the eighth to host such consultations, marking a significant step in the policy development process.

“The consultations seek to gather insights from stakeholders on the critical issues affecting policing at the provincial level. This input is vital in shaping our collective vision for a safer South Africa by 2030,” explained Ms. Mphaphuli.

The two-day event commenced with intensive engagement among key stakeholders, including government representatives. Tomorrow’s agenda will feature broader participation from Community Policing Forums (CPFs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs), and community representatives.

The Provincial Consultation represents a crucial milestone in the journey towards a comprehensive and inclusive National Policing Policy, reflecting the diverse perspectives and aspirations of South African communities.
