The Portfolio Committee on PublicWorks, Roads, Community Safety and Transport Management is concerned about the state of Zeerust Police Station. This came after the Committee went on an oversight visit at the station as part of the Oversight Week that the Legislature is embarking on in the Ngaka Molema District this week (from 14- 17 February 2023). During the oversight visit the committee discovered the following;
-the station building which was handed over in 2020 is having a lot of defects, including leakages to the offices,
-the station which last year experienced a case of 5 detainees escaping, the cells are in a bad condition,
-Human resources is a serious challenge at the station, with Detectives carrying as many as 159 dockets each.
Hon. Freddy Sonakile who led the delegation said the Committee will be making submissions to the Department of Public Works, as well as the the Department of Police to intervene in some of the challenges discovered.
“It cannot be correct that the police are expected to perform optimally while the working conditions are not favourable.
We will also be requesting Public Works to provide us with their plan to deal with defective police stations that they have built,” said Hon. Sonakile
