Rustenburg Film Festival Kicks Off with Focus on Local Talent, Technology, and a Unified South African Brand

The Rustenburg Film Festival launched last night at the Rustenburg Mall’s Sterkinekor, igniting a week-long celebration of South African filmmaking and creativity. The event was opened by Rustenburg Local Municipality’s Acting Executive Mayor, Karabo Phutu, who encouraged local filmmakers to develop and promote content that reflects the unique stories of the North West Province. Phutu’s remarks underscored the value of local storytelling in strengthening community identity and contributing to South Africa’s cultural landscape.

Opening night was hosted by Keamogetswe Ratlhagane and renowned comedian Blaq Gzus, who energized the crowd with their charisma and passion for the arts. Their presence set a vibrant tone for the festival, which promises a range of engaging sessions, discussions, and networking opportunities throughout the week.

Exploring AI’s Role in Filmmaking

Among the festival’s key sessions is a masterclass titled “Filmmaking x AI,” scheduled at the Rustenburg Civic Centre’s Hall 1. Led by acclaimed filmmaker Ashley Ncube, this session will explore the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on filmmaking. Attendees will gain insights into how AI is reshaping everything from scriptwriting to production and post-production processes. This session highlights the festival’s commitment to fostering innovation in the South African film industry by providing local creators with access to the latest industry advancements.

Panel Discussion: A Unified Creative Brand for South Africa

The festival will also feature an important panel discussion, “South African Inc: Developing a Unified Creative Brand,” which takes place on 8 November at 16:10. Moderated by noted filmmaker Vincent Moloi, the panel will include Yolanda Ncokotwana, Head of Industry Development; Salman Khan, a film tourism advocate; and Jacqueline Sainders from KZN Tourism & Film. Together, they will discuss strategies for building a unified creative brand for South Africa, combining film and tourism to boost the nation’s global image. This discussion aims to inspire collaboration across sectors and promote South Africa as a dynamic, culturally rich destination.

With its mix of local talent, thought-provoking sessions, and industry expertise, the Rustenburg Film Festival offers an invaluable platform for filmmakers, creatives, and community members to connect and collaborate. The festival not only celebrates local stories but also positions Rustenburg as a hub for film, creativity, and technological innovation.
