North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsomi, today announced the 2024 matric results in a celebratory event in Klerksdorp, with Johannes Jurie Blignaut from Rustenburg High School stealing the spotlight as the province’s top-performing learner.

Blignaut achieved an extraordinary six distinctions, scoring a total of 1,735 marks across all his subjects. The announcement was met with thunderous applause from dignitaries, including North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi, as the province celebrated his academic excellence.

The province’s best-performing Local Education Offices were Moretele at 91.2%, Rustenburg at 89.9%, and Madibeng at 89.6%. Mamusa Local Education Office in the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district was named the most improved, while Lekwa-Teemane (79.6%) and Kgetleng River (79.0%) offices were encouraged to strive for better results.

Kopano Circuit in Madibeng Local Education Office led circuit performance with a stellar 95.70% pass rate, up from 87.14% in 2023. Following closely were Makapanstad Central in Moretele at 95.03% and Bokamoso Circuit in Rustenburg at 94.87%. Meepong Circuit in Matlosana was the most improved, jumping from 70.11% in 2023 to 88.87% this year.

Rustenburg High School not only produced the province’s best learner but also claimed the top spot for the highest number of subject distinctions with 279 distinctions. Potchefstroom Gimnasium followed with 246 distinctions, and Potchefstroom High School for Girls with 148 distinctions.
In the category of distinctions as a percentage of total subjects, Potchefstroom High School for Girls came out on top with 25.43%, followed by Potchefstroom Gimnasium at 22.10%, and Ferdinand Postma at 20.40%.

MEC Motsomi praised the hard work of learners, educators, and parents in achieving remarkable results. “This year’s achievements show the potential of our education system when we work together. We are proud of all our learners, particularly those who have excelled despite challenges,” she said.
The event underscored the province’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, with stakeholders pledging to build on this year’s success for an even brighter future.
