Following concerns raised by Magalies Water on December 26, 2023, regarding water quality issues in the Vaalkop – Bospoort Supply Scheme, affecting Royal Bafokeng Administrative (RBA) areas and Rustenburg Local Municipal (RLM) jurisdiction, specialists from the Water Services Division conducted an investigation. Preliminary and final results assured the public that despite the brown color, the water supplied posed no health risks.

Accordint to Magalies Water spokesperson, David Magae, scientific testing was conducted to identify the causes and effects of the colored water. Magae said by December 28, 2023, water quality improvements were observed in the supply scheme, meeting SANS 241 specifications after system optimization. Natural processes, exacerbated by climatic conditions, were identified as the main culprits, affecting water quality from the Vaalkop Dam.
“Magalies Water, in collaboration with the Department of Water and Sanitation, swiftly addressed challenges, adjusting abstraction levels to mitigate operational issues caused by elevated manganese and organic matter levels. The system’s integrity has been restored, meeting and exceeding quality standards,” said Magae.

Acknowledging the increased water demand in Rustenburg Local Municipality and RBA Supply Area, Magalies Water assures continuous supply with top-notch quality. The organization appreciates the cooperation, patience, and understanding of affected customers, pledging ongoing vigilance and real-time responses to any water quality challenges.
